Chewie the Coonhound and Door County Sled Dog

Door County Sled Dogs

5/9/2019
The musical tones of a coonhound in full flight – burning up the trail -pulling a SLED?????? WHAT ?????? Door County Sled Dogs first caught my attention through a post from Anna Nirva on “Life With My Rescued Coonhound”. Also catching my attention was the fact that the sled pulling hound in question was from my home state of Kentucky, notoriously lacking in animal welfare laws in general and overwhelmed with hounds in need in particular. I decided to contact the Door County Sled Dog founders because I was so excited to see a coonhound in this very untraditional role. A PERFECT opportunity to say, “See? I told you – hounds can do anything!”

Just chillin’ – embracing my houndness!!

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Bonnie Ulrich, who along with her husband Rick Desotelle, founded the Door County Sled Dogs – “a real traveling circus” as Bonnie laughingly puts it!! I am so delighted that she has given me the information and opportunity to share this wonderful story on my coonhound blog. The DCSD cares for and maintains 36 sanctuary dogs, mainly husky and husky mixes. I learned SO much from her about sled dogs. I had no idea that “Alaskan huskies”, the racing sled dogs, are often mixed with pointer or some type of hound. But according to Bonnie, this makes total sense because hounds have the muscle structure, speed, endurance and good feet to excel at this sport. The Alaskan husky is a working dog category with the AKC, but not recognized as a breed since they are a mix.
Sooooo, when there was an opening in her sled dog team, she went searching for some type of hound. Enter Chewie, formerly Joker. Another hound lover sent the facts on Chewie to them and she decided to take a chance on him. Chewie was a major project. He was housed at a shelter for a solid year, then sent to a foster home for some much needed TLC. He was emaciated, with infected ears, and worms so bad it took six different medicines to get rid of them.

Hangin’ on the bus with my sled dog pals!!

Bonnie says that when Chewie was first around the other sled dogs , when they were going out, he raised such a ruckus that they decided why not? Let’s see what he can do. Chewie, in typical hound dog fashion would NOT be left out of all the fun. Chewie is absolutely a star. He has assimilated into an awesome sled dog. Bonnie maintains that he is a critical component to their education and support for all breeds of dogs, helping to connect dog lovers with possible homes for hounds. Both Bonnie and Rick have a special place in their hearts for the coonhounds of the South, and her Chewie plays an important role as ambassador for coonhound breeds. He is becoming a vital part of the education of possible future “houndies” that might take a chance and  appreciate the wonderful dogs we call coonhounds.

Let’s GO!! AHROOOOOO!!!!

DCSD can be seen on the road with their crew, focusing on education about ALL dogs. This includes, the need for rescue, helping people know the difference between good and bad breeders, encouraging families to do the research to determine the right fit for their family when choosing a dog, good pet care, obedience tips,  and more.  The DCSD team works with thousands of young people about leadership qualities, and teambuilding. How lead dogs share the same characteristics as good people leaders, how to listen, follow directions, learn to plan ahead and care about their team members.  They let everyone know that although it seems that the leaders get all the glory, by having them see and meet the team dogs, they understand that without good team members, there is NO team. Another important part of their mission is to mentor those who may be struggling with dogs they already have, to hopefully prevent the dog from being returned to a shelter.  In addition, their focus on the historical contributions that dogs have made to our world, help people join in the celebration of the awesomeness of our canine companions.

The Door County Sled Dogs in action !!! Enjoy !!!

DCSD is currently gearing up for an exhibit celebrating coonhounds at the Door County Museum and Education center. Bonnie is definitely a woman on a mission. Please check out their amazing work at DCSD and find out how much you are missing by not embracing  your inner “houndness”. If you are looking for a fun, joyful, goofball, then a coonhound is your dog !!!!

SUPER COONIE DORA!!!!

I am very excited to work on this blog post. I am always searching for coonhounds being stellar in various, unusual and unexpected ways.  Soooo, this post highlights Tim Root and his beautiful coonhound Pandora, or Dora for short.  Dora is a TWC that Tim adopted from a shelter several years ago.  According to Tim she is a total couch potato and quiet at home. It is evident that he loves his girl. She even helped him with his wedding announcements !!

Channeling the inner lounge hound  How is this comfortable ????

Tim also reports that his now wife was “less than enthusiastic” about adopting a coonhound, but Dora won her over and now “they’re almost inseparable”.  I mean seriously, how can you not fall in love with a hound that does your dishes????

Now to the “other side of Dora”.  Tim is a huge outdoorsman, and in the course of pursuing that hobby, ran into several deer hunters who complained about having sleepless nights because they were not able to recover their harvest after a successful day of deer hunting.  Tim did some research and discovered there was a “leash tracking” dog license in his home state of New York. He took the test, got the license, and Linwood Tracking and Recovery was born.  Hunters were skeptical at first but Tim reports that Dora is amazing and has turned skeptics into believers. He always hears  “That dog is AMAZING!” Dora’s current personal best is a track of about two miles straight to the deer.

AHROOOO ! We did it Dad !!!!

Tim says he and his wife will always have hounds. He is sooo happy he picked Dora and cannot believe someone just threw her away  at the shelter.  The two most unlikely people to share a conversation, me a vegetarian since 1982, and Tim an avid sportsman and hunter. This is a good example of how opposite ends of the spectrum can come together. Dora and Tim provide a great service to the hunters whose prey would be lost and “wasted” if not for their service. Tim is a responsible hunter and absolutely treats Dora as part of the family.   I can totally appreciate that!!  Tim’s license does not allow him to charge for his services, nor does he expect anything when he goes out. He adds that if people want to give him money for his help, he donates that money to the shelter where he got Dora.

The beautiful and talented Dora. Couch potato princess by day, kick butt tracker by night!! Kudos to the fabulous coonhound. Dora proves my point so well, that coonhounds can do just about anything !! They are not “just hunting dogs”.  Thank you so much Tim, for sharing your story with me.  Please keep us posted on your adventures with Dora, and welcome to the family !!!!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Please check out  Tim’s facebook page for Linwood Tracking and Recovery.

All About Coonhounds

Chris Rock and handsome Clooney !

In an ongoing effort to “rail against the powers that be” and get coonhounds placed higher on the AKC breed popularity list  – where they SHOULD BE!! here is some info about Black and tans — – I  rescued a black and tan many years ago – his name was Baker and I found out about him through Jayne Schlegel with American Black and Tan – he was an awesome dog – generous, kind, loyal, steadfast and super catcher of possums in my barn !! GO Baker !! I dearly loved him.

From the AKC Breed popularity page

Temperament:
Easy-Going, Bright, Brave
AKC Breed Popularity: Ranks 128 of 194  (what????)
Height: 25-27 inches (male), 23-25 inches (female)
Weight: 65-110 pounds
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
Group: Hound Group

About the Black and Tan Coonhound
Black and Tans have an amazingly sensitive nose, long, velvety ears, and a sweet disposition. The coal-black coat features rich tan accents, including the distinctive “pumpkin seeds” above keenly expressive eyes. These are big, strong hounds: A good-size male can stand 27 inches at the shoulder and cover ground with effortless, eager strides.
B&Ts are sociable hounds. A lonely B&T will serenade the neighborhood with loud, mournful “music.” B&Ts can keep pace with the most active family, but they also can hog the sofa for hours on end. Hounds will be hounds: A passing squirrel can arouse B&T prey drive in no time flat, so a strong leash and sturdy fence are must-haves. B&Ts might be too much hound for the lifestyle of every owner.

     Beautiful B and T Kaiser

My caveat  — But they are amazing and well worth the effort.  My mission is to educate, but also be realistic — Coonhounds are NOT for everyone. (just like any other breed of dog)  Please be diligent, do your homework, be realistic about what you want in a dog, and what you can handle.  Do you have small children? ARE you willing to educate them on how to “be around” a dog safely?? Do you travel? Is your family very active? Are you gone from home a lot due to work or any other reason??

Keep all this in mind – do your homework – be realistic about your expectations and be ready to FALL IN LOVE

                                                                                                     Well Dressed Hound !!!!

Coonie Comrades/Petunia

When I noticed this coonhound on Instagram, I immediately wanted to find out more. I wanted to hear the story. Her rescuer’s girlfriend shared the details with me, and I thought a story so heartwarming should be shared on the blog.
Sweet Petunia                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Petunia is a one year old blue tick coonhound, rescued from a kill shelter in South Carolina. Petunia and all of her ten siblings were shot and she was the only survivor. She has scoliosis so it is believed that all of her siblings had some sort of issue as well. The bullet that shot Petunia is still lodged in her spine and doctors felt that surgery could cause further damage. She was rescued by St Hubert’s in New Jersey.
                                                                                                                     Beautiful girl !
Enter her rescuer, who started randomly looking for a puppy in March of this year, after his sons witnessed their own puppy get run over and killed by a reckless driver.  The puppy they lost was similar in looks to Petunia, so he decided it was meant to be. The fact that Petunia came with some “complications” did not deter him, even though he had never dealt with a handicapped pet before, he decided everyone and every dog  deserves a chance. Petunia has been living with her family since April of this year with her three human brothers, one dog brother and two cat sisters, plus her awesome Dad and proud Aunt.

I look awesome in red !!!

Petunia loves to zoom around in her wheelchair and play tug of war with all of her two and four legged family (uhhh minus the cats) She reports that her owner is amazing with her. “He has a gentle but firm way with her. He doesn’t treat her like she “can’t”, reports her proud Aunt.  “He wants her to explore and try new things.” She is now able to “stand” on her back legs and walk a few feet. Petunia is showered with love and affection from everyone and loves everyone back in return. The family handles the paralysis together.  Petunia has to wear diapers and everyone in the family is now expert at changing them. Petunia is pretty much treated like a normal pup. She has a daily routine, which includes play time, wheel time and rest time.

                                                            OK What’s next ??

Petunia is truly a gem.  And like most dogs her love knows no bounds and she does not see herself as “handicapped”.  This family has embraced her and accepted her with truly inspiring  love, kindness and courage.  Obviously Petunia has found her perfect family. I am truly honored to share her story !!

Today’s super star is Clooney, Chris Rock’s absolutely gorgeous Black and Tan coonhound.  Chris adopted Clooney about five years ago and after looking at some of their accomplishments, they have not been still very much !!  I am in awe of all the healing and joy they have spread throughout their community. It is very inspiring !

                                       SUPER CLOONEY !!

Chris shared with me that Clooney started off as a hunting dog, she is assured of that due to the tattoo in his ear.  He was found in the woods thirty pounds underweight and ended up at the Humane Society. Chris immediately recognized what a special dog he is and as they say, “The rest is history.”

Ready to Work

This post is about Jan Ferguson-Kramer’s fabulous redbone hound Dixie –  yet another story of the heart, courage and endless magic of a coonhound!

From Jan:

Dixie was rescued when she was seven months old. She had five different parasites, was 20 pounds underweight, had infected ears and a hernia. No contact with human beings for seven months locked up in a crate.  We took her to dog obedience class and they suggested that we try her as a therapy dog. That training was the best for her all around as she learned to let people touch her and love on her. Her trips to the nursing homes were always special. The patients there loved having the dogs there to play with. One trip to the VA hospital in particular, she went up to a man who was bedridden, and unable to move.  Dixie jumped up on the bed, laid down next to him and he cried.  She learned to give love as well as receive it from being a therapy dog.  Dixie was benefiting as well as the people she was visiting.  She LOVES them and they LOVE her right back!!

Jan, thank you for sharing your story and it is my honor to welcome you and Dixie to the “family”!

SUPER COONIE

                                      Up and over!!

Julie Dutton’s amazing coonhound Ginny is a total super star !!! For anyone that ever doubted that coonhounds can be agility, obedience or any other kind of trained — well here you go !!!!

https://www.messenger.com/t/julie.dutton.714

From Julie  – the story of Ginny !

I adopted her three years ago (at the time she was estimated to be between 1.5-3yrs old). She was originally found as a stray in West Virginia and ended up at a Greyhound rescue in MA where I adopted her. I convinced my parents to let me visit the rescue for my 19th birthday (to actually originally look at a different dog) and within a few minutes of meeting her, I knew she was the one. Two days later, we brought her home and she has been such a blessing to have. I was working at a kennel at the time, but for the last two and a half years, have been working as a dog trainer at a training facility in Massachusetts. This has given me the opportunity to work with her around various distractions on a regular basis and as I learn more in the dog training world, challenged and inspired me to begin teaching her new things as well as practice what she already knows in various situations and environments. She still has a lot of potential in her training to learn more and while generally very good around every day distractions, still occasionally has trouble listening around certain distractions (I.e. deer), which we are working on. However, she has come a long way since I first adopted her, and I can’t imagine life without her!

Julie thank you again for sharing your amazing story and welcome to the family !

Your partnership with Ginny is just awe inspiring !!

Talk to the Hound

            Super cool FB page                                      www.hoperisesnews.com

While doing some research on rescue hounds that have in some way “saved “their humans, I came across this amazing story that is the epitomy of “who saved who”? that we hear so often. I have been given permission to share this story from “Hope Rises”, about a Southern hound named Victoria and her very thankful rescuer.  Hope Rises is an oasis of hope in a world that is sometimes very scary.  I recommend you check it out !!

HERO HOUND.
This rescue dog sniffed out cancer on her owner’s nose. Let’s all stop and hug our own dogs today for being incredibly, loyal angels. Read more from Lauren Amy.
“Victoria came from a rural shelter in South Carolina and brings us laughter and adventure. But recently, she brought me much more.
Last spring, I noticed a small bump on my nose and assumed it was a pimple or scratch. It went away. And then seemed to come back. And what was particularly odd was that Victoria would fixate on it, and sniff the spot like crazy. She was so persistent that I made an appointment with a doctor to have it looked at. I also captured a photo of her inspection.
What Victoria had detected was confirmed by a biopsy.
I had basal cell carcinoma on my nose. The lesion grew under my skin, requiring cosmetic surgical repair of the hole it left behind.
I have no doubt that without Victoria’s help, that lesion would have remained in my face longer and caused further disfigurement and even risked metastasis.”

Thanks to her heroic hound Victoria, who she adopted eight months ago from her organization Magic’s Mission Beagle and Hound Rescue, she had her symptoms checked out early. Lauren said: “When she came to us in the shelter she arrived with a very badly damaged eye. After fostering her we fell in love and decided to adopt her. “While we don’t know what caused the injuries to her eye, many hounds sustain wounds while hunting because they are brave and hardly think of what they are running through when chasing something.” According to Lauren, Victoria has more than returned the favor of being rescued.

Healing Hounds !!

I recently came across a “survey” of popularity for dog breeds in the USA compiled by the AKC and of course I had to dive in and “check the coonhounds”. To my surprise Treeing Walker Coonhounds, described as being brave, smart, and courteous, having the ability to quicken our pulse with their “powerful and propulsive hind quarters working to cover maximum ground with minimal effort”, possessing a beautiful tri color coat, and the ability to melt your heart “basking in the warmth of a campfire after an honest night’s work”. And I quote “this sweet-faced hound will look up and stir your soul with his gentle, pleading expression. ( Note illustration of the gentle pleading expression below). Mercy, what a pretty picture! No wonder Treeing Walkers are called the People’s Choice”. Whoo hoooooooo !! YAY !! Awesome! totally agree !!! Ranking ???? 137 out of 194 ??? Immediately my feathers are extremely ruffled. I called for Riley B my faithful and trusty TWC mix so that I could quickly do some healing stretches to calm myself down !!!!
